The below advice is from our own personal experience and lists things you may not have considered previously.

To start with find as many companies as you can, get comfy and and ring them all up to get quotes, make sure that the information you supply is as accurate as possible as inaccurate information could invalidate your insurance.

When speaking to the companies make sure you let them know that you have been offered insurance for less elsewhere, because at the end of the day they want your money and are often on commission per sale and have some flexibility in the price.

Under no circumstances drive without insurance, the best scenario is that you'll get arrested before you hurt someone - a large fine and six + points on your driving licence. Damage caused by these types of drivers is the reason why we all pay so much for car insurance in the first place.

There are three types of cover:

Third Party Only

The most basic cover commonly offered. You get no pay out, the person you collide with gets their car repaired and any compensation needed paid for.

Third Party, Fire and Theft

This is the same as third party only with the following benefits, also covers your car against theft or fire damage.

Fully Comprehensive

A lot more expensive than third party, fire and theft, although your car will be fixed or replaced even when the accident was your fault. This cover is mostly used on newer vehicles where a great deal of money can be lost. Many finance companies insist on you having it.
