Can You Drive a Car Home Immediately After Buying It?

Only when the car is legally ready for the road and you are insured to drive it. The seller's tax does not transfer to you.

Tax is your job from the moment you buy

When a vehicle changes keeper, the previous keeper's tax is cancelled. You must tax the car before driving it, using the new keeper details where available.

Insurance must already be in force

Arrange cover to start before you set off. A dealer or seller saying that the car is 'insured' is not the same as you being insured to drive it.

Do a five-minute safety check

Before an excited first drive home, check the tyres visually, mirrors, lights, fuel level and warning lights. Make sure you understand the handbrake and basic controls before joining traffic.

A quote obtained before collection can prevent the handover turning into a scramble for whatever cover you can find at the last minute.
