Secure the car properly before you get out. Use the parking brake firmly and leave the transmission in an appropriate gear or park position.
do not depend on one thing
A manual car can be left in gear as an extra safeguard; an automatic should be left in Park where applicable. Follow the handbook.
Think about where the car would roll
Position the wheels sensibly in relation to the kerb and local guidance, particularly on a steep hill.
Check before walking away
If the car moves as you release the foot brake, stop and secure it again. Do not assume the parking brake is fully applied because the lever or switch moved.
Parking damage is one of the most ordinary claims a new driver can face. A few extra seconds securing and positioning the car is worthwhile.
