Learn the controls before you need them
Sit in the parked car and find the demister, rear fog light, hazard switch, fuel flap release, bonnet release and screenwash controls. New drivers often know how to drive but lose attention searching for a switch at the wrong moment.
Drive a few ordinary routes
A supermarket, a family visit and a familiar town route are useful because you can concentrate on driving rather than navigation. Add unfamiliar roads gradually.
Check the boring paperwork
Make sure you know when the MOT is due, whether the vehicle is taxed, what your insurance actually covers and where the locking-wheel-nut key or spare key is kept.
Insurance is easiest to compare when you answer with the way you will really use and park the car, rather than guessing what might sound cheapest.
