A mechanic may need to drive the car to identify a noise, confirm a repair or complete an MOT-related check. That is normal garage work.

A reputable garage should be able to explain how road tests are insured. This matters particularly if the business is informal or somebody suggests taking the car home overnight.
Your own policy may still need accurate information
Repairs, modifications or a change in how the car is used can sometimes be relevant to your insurer. Routine servicing normally is not a modification, but altered parts can be.
When buying insurance, answer questions about modifications accurately; a repair that returns the car to standard is different from changing its specification.
